Parish News: The Anniversary of Dedication and 30th Week of the Year

October 27, 2023 by Guy Willis

This Sunday we celebrate the 138th Anniversary of the Dedication of our Church, which took place on the 31st of October 1885. On that day this building set aside as a place which would point to heaven, where we can come close to God and God will come close to us.

You can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: every penny counts! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

(The readings for this feast are not available online.)

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Conor, Chinye, Victor, Mercy, Olga, John, Cordelia and Lotlia.
The Faithful departed
The recently departed, all who have worshipped in and served at Saint Benet’s and those whose year’s mind falls about this time amongst them Jane Elizabeth Roberts (2nd).

Thursday November 2nd is All Souls Day when we remember before God all the faithful departed. There will be a said mass at 8.30am and a sung mass at 7pm. At the 7pm mass, names of the dead whom we particularly want to pray for will be read out. If you would like someone remembered by name please add them to the list at the back of church or email me.

Our church was consecrated on the 31st October 1885 so today we keep the 138th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church. Father Frank Rowland was the first Vicar. Before that, a temporary mission church had served this parish which was opened in 1881. The patronage of Saint Benet came about because funds from St Benet, Paul’s Wharf on Queen Victoria Street were given to help with the foundation of our new church.

Brenda, a longstanding member of our congregation, would like to come back to church but can’t manage the walk. Would you be able to help push her chair up from Osney Crescent once every few months? Please speak to Nathan for more details, who is putting together a rota.

The cover art this week is The Dedication of the church of Montecassino by Luca Giordano, 1677. Held in the Capodimonte Museum, Naples.
