When Jesus throws the moneychangers out of the Temple he is not making a point about a divison between secular and sacred; a very recent idea. Rather he is drawing attention both to the need to come to the Temple ready to meet God (not just to fulfil a rule), and to the correspondence between himself and the Holy of Holies. Unlike the Temple built of stone by human hands, this Temple is indestructable. You can find the readings for this coming Sunday here. Holy Week is the most important week of the year; do try to come to as much as you are able, particularly between Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. Much of our worship over this sacred time will be enriched with beautiful choral music. Now is the time to put these dates in your diary! Holy Tuesday – 26th March Holy Wednesday – 27th March Maundy Thursday – 28th March Good Friday – 29th March (day of fasting & abstinence) Holy Saturday – 30th March Easter Sunday – 31st March (British Summer Time begins – clocks go forward) The cover art is Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple, c. 1570-75 by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) held in the Minneapolis Institute of Art. |
