Parish News: 1st Sunday and Week of Lent

March 4, 2022 by Guy Willis

The great fast of Lent began on Wednesday, and on this first Sunday of the season we contemplate the temptation of Jesus for 40 days in the desert. We offer our sacrifice of giving up something we like in solidarity with Our Lord who is preparing to give up his life on the Cross for us. How will you let him draw you closer this Lent?

You can read the scripture readings for this Sunday here.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Conor, Chinye, Adelida, Jason, Rod and Edny.

The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped in and served at Saint Benet’s and those whose year’s mind falls this week.

Richard Arnold (Priest) RIP, died 10 years ago this year whilst Vicar of this Parish. For his anniversary on Wednesday the 16th of March there will be a Sung Mass of Requiem at 7pm followed by refreshments.

If you would like to make your confession this Lent, or find out more about this way in which we can receive God’s forgiveness, please speak to or contact Father Guy.

Have you ever wondered how it came to be that we worship God in the way that we do? Do you want to learn more about the mass? Bread of Heaven is our Lent Course this year – an opportunity to learn more about the meaning and history of the main act of Christian worship. It begins on Monday 7th of March at 7pm following the 6.30pm mass and runs for 5 weeks:

7th Mar: ‘Approaching the Mystery’
14th Mar: ‘Do this in Remembrance of Me’
21st Mar: ‘The New Covenant in my Blood’
28th Mar: ‘Take and Eat’
4th Apr: ‘Go forth, the Mass is ended’

The cover art this week is The Temptation of Christ by Jacopo Tintoretto 1579-81 held in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice, Italy.
