Parish News: Pentecost and the 10th Week of the Year

June 6, 2025 by Guy Willis

At Pentecost, 50 days after Easter, the disciples receive the Holy Spirit and suddenly they are able to speak in many languages. When human pride built the Tower of Babel the result was mutual incomprehension; with the coming of the Holy Spirit the universal reign of Jesus Christ is proclaimed to all.

St Benet’s is self supporting: we receive no regular central church or government funding, so you can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: and every penny really does count! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

The readings for this Sunday are available here.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Reece, John, Chinye, Cheryl and Ann.
The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped in and served at Saint Benet’s, those who have died recently amongst them Ron Corp, Priest; Martin Poole, Priest; Stephen Fry; Charles Dean and Metelena Taylor and those whose year’s mind falls about this time, amongst them John Davidson (8th); Amy Elizabeth Dent (8th); Tassie Buchanan (13th) and Susan Gillard (13th).
Those to be ordained deacon
John Laverick for All Hallows Tottenham, Oliver Baldwin for All Hallows Gospel Oak, Sam Williams for OMHR Clerkenwell, Nathan Barrett for St Mary’s Hayes, Georges Iskandar for St Benet’s Kentish Town.
Those to be ordained priest
William Allen for St James Paddington and Simon Billington for St Michael’s Wood Green.

Georges Iskandar is to be ordained  to the sacred order of Deacon by our bishop Jonathan at 11am on Saturday 28th June at Saint Andrew Holborn, EC4A 3AF. Please pray for him now as he prepares and come to the ordination in June.

On Sunday 6th July Jonathan our Bishop will be here to celebrate Mass with Confirmation for us on the Sunday of St Benedict; it will be followed by a parish party with a bring and share lunch.

On Mon 9th June the installation of our new lighting system will start.  It is a big project and will take about 4 weeks to complete. The result will be a properly functioning, energy efficient LED system which will both give us light to see and enhance the beauty of the church. All will be as normal on Sundays; in the week the church will be open only for the daily mass and entry will be by the side door in the garden.

The cover art is a depiction of the Christian Holy Spirit as a dove, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, in the apse of Saint Peter’s Basilica, c. 1660.
