Parish News: The 1st Sunday and Week of Lent

February 20, 2026 by Guy Willis

Jesus experienced everything that we do – except sin – and that includes temptation. For all of us there are those moments when we have a choice and we don’t always make the right one. In this holy season we are asked to consider more closely what we do and say so that we may do more and more the will of God.

St Benet’s is self supporting: we receive no regular central church or government funding, so you can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: and every penny really does count! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

The readings for this Sunday can be found here.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Reece, John, Cheryl, Ann, Chika, Alessandro, Sonny, Jan, Danielle, Grace and Grace.
The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped and served here, those who have died recently and those whose year’s mind falls about this time, amongst them Jane Bultitude, Patrick Keating, Grace Cooper (23rd), Monica Hanlon (25th) and Robert Cooper (26th).

Fridays in Lent (from 27th Feb) Mass 6pm, Stations of the Cross 6.30pm. In the Stations of the Cross we follow Jesus from his condemnation to his burial. It lasts about 30 minutes and is an excellent way to deepen your life of prayer during this holy season.

We are invited to join the people of St Chad Haggerston E2 8JR on Saturday 28th February for their patronal festival at 12 noon. The Bishop of Fulham will celebrate and preach, and there will be a party afterwards.

Jonathan our Bishop warmly invites you all to his Lay People’s Congress: Ready with a Reason at which Bishop Lindsay Urwin OGS will help us to reflect on how we can more effective in our sharing of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Saturday 21st March 2026 10.00am – 3.30pm at St Alban’s, Holborn EC1N 7RD.

The cover art is The Temptation in the Wilderness by John St John Long, 1824. Held in Tate Britain.
