Parish News: Sunday of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 11, 2026 by Guy Willis

After 2000 years of Christian history, it is easy to forget how scandalous it is that we take an instrument of torture as our badge of honour. What was meant to be simply painful and humiliating turned out also to be the means by which God would save the world from itself. That is why we glory in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, because through it we are saved and made free.

St Benet’s is self supporting: we receive no regular central church or government funding, so you can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: and every penny really does count! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Reece, John, Cheryl, Ann, Chika, Sonny, Danielle, Grace, Carl, Rex, Mary, Chinye and Fr Luke Demetri.
The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped and served here, those who have died recently and those whose year’s mind falls about this time, amongst them Bob Hunt (15th) and Barbara Basquill (18th).

Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham. Thursday 24th September 7pm. Come and join the people and clergy of St Silas, NW5 3QP for this feast, honouring Mary under her most important English title. Solemn Mass. Preacher: Canon Paul Cartwright SSC.

Choral Evensong of Michaelmas. Sunday 27th September 5pm. At All Hallows, NW3 2JP. Followed by drinks.

All Souls Day Lamps. If you wish to have a seven-day lamp lit for departed relatives or friends for the week of All Souls’ Day (2nd Nov), please add your name to the list at the back of church or speak to Terry for more information. These lamps will cost £6 each.

The cover art is The Triumph of the Cross over Paganism, a ceiling fresco  by Tommaso Laureti, 1585. It is in the Hall of Constantine, Vatican City.
