Parish News: The Seventh Sunday and Week of the Year

February 17, 2023 by Guy Willis

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the 22nd of February. On this final Sunday before Lent, we hear that we should love our enemies. Is this a injuction from Jesus to be a doormat and a pushover? As we consider more deeply what love really means, we begin to see that this teaching is both more subtle, and more radical, than that.

You can find the scriptures for this week here.

Lent Programme 2023

Ash Wednesday – 22nd February
This is a day when all Christians should attend church if at all possible. Said Mass with Ashing at 8.30am, Sung Mass with Ashing at 7pm (Jean Langlais, Missa Simplicitate).

Stations of the Cross – Fridays
Every Friday in Lent at 6.30pm for 30 minutes, beginning on the 24th of February. In this short devotion we follow Jesus to the Cross and learn to let him bear our sufferings.

Lent Learning Course – Mondays
Join us at 7pm for one hour each Monday in Lent, beginning on the 27th of February after the 6.30pm Mass. We will be learning about the concept of covenant and how it can help us navigate the Bible and can help us see God’s plan through the Old Testament.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Conor, Chinye, Adelida, Jason, Rod, Edny, John, Yen, John, Sarah & Reece.

The Faithful departed
The recently departed, all who have worshipped in and served at Saint Benet’s and those whose year’s mind falls this week.

The annual parish pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham will take place from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th June 2023. Once again we will be joining with our friends in the Parish of Old St Pancras for this. For more details or for a booking form, speak to Father Guy.

The cover art is The Sermon on the Mount, by Fra Angelico, c. 1395-1455, in the Dominican Convent of St Mark, now the Museo di San Marco, Florence.
