Parish News: 21st Sunday and Week of the Year

August 21, 2026 by Guy Willis

Peter recognises Jesus as the Messiah. In response the Lord says: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church. Peter is chosen as the first leader of his Church not because he is the cleverest of the apostles, or the richest, or the best looking. His faith is grounded and firm, built on rock. Even when he gets it wrong, he always returns to the true foundation: Jesus the Christ.

St Benet’s is self supporting: we receive no regular central church or government funding, so you can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: and every penny really does count! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

The readings for this Sunday are available here.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Reece, John, Cheryl, Ann, Chika, Sonny, Danielle, Grace, Mary, Carl, Rex, Mary, Chinye and Fr Luke Demetri.
The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped and served here, those who have died recently and those whose year’s mind falls about this time, amongst them Paul Arnold, James Butt, Jane Nash (26th) and Joan Howell (27th).

During August there will be no weekday masses whilst Father Guy takes some rest and holiday. Sundays will be as usual with Sung Mass and Sunday School and weekday masses resume on Monday 31st August. If you would like to go to a weekday mass, you can try our neighbouring parishes of St Silas NW5 2QP, St Mary NW5 1SL and All Hallows NW3 2JP. Check their website news pages for times.

We are invited to:
– Pontifical Choral Evensong, Procession and Veneration of the Relics on the Feast of the Translation of the Relics of St Cuthbert at 6pm on Sunday 6th September at St Cuthbert, Philbeach Gardens SW5 9EB. Followed by a reception.
– Solemn Mass on their Patronal Festival of the Birthday of the Blessed Virign Mary at 7pm on Tuesday 8th September at St Mary Brookfield NW5 1SL. Preacher: Father Guy Willis SSC. Followed by drinks and supper.

The cover art is Christ gives the keys of the kingdom to Peter by Pietro Perugino, c. 1481 which is in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.
