Parish News: The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 12, 2025 by Guy Willis

After 2000 years of Christian history, it is easy to forget how scandalous it is that we take an instrument of torture as our badge of honour. What was meant to be simply painful and humiliating turned out also to be the means by which God would save the world from itself. That is why we glory in the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ, because through it we are saved and made free.

St Benet’s is self supporting: we receive no regular central church or government funding, so you can donate using card online to support St Benet’s: and every penny really does count! You can also donate by cash or card in person, by texting BENET followed by your donation amount to 70450 to give that amount. Or why not set up a regular standing order with your bank?

The readings for this coming Sunday are available here.

Please pray for:
The sick and those in need
Brenda, Reece, John, Chinye, Cheryl, Ann, Mana, Chika, Alessandro, Sonny, Jan, Danielle and Grace.
The Faithful departed
All who have worshipped and served here, those who have died recently and those whose year’s mind falls about this time, amongst them Bob Hunt (15th) and Barbara Basquill (18th).

On Sunday 21st September at 6pm we are invited to St Matthew Willesden, St Mary’s Road, NW10 4AU for Solemn High Mass for their patronal festival of St Matthew.

Friday 3rd October, 6.45-10pm: Harvest Barn Dance, here at St Benet’s. Pro band & caller; Free nibbles; Bar; All star raffle. £6 adult, £3 child. Book at https://tickets.myiknowchurch.co.uk/gb/NzkzMS0z/t or pay in cash or by card in person.

Donations for the Raffle at the Barn Dance are needed! Please bring them to church after any service.

The cover art is a picture of the Titulus Crucis, found by St Helen when searching for the Cross and preserved in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Rome.
